Gavi DOCG 2025: A Vintage of Balance, Resilience, and Forward Vision
Italy’s 100% Cortese builds on balance, terroir, and data-driven innovation – exporting 90% of its production worldwide
Gavi, November 2025 – With the 2025 harvest now safely in the cellar, producers across the Gavi DOCG can look back on a growing season that delivered balance, finesse, and excellent quality grapes. The year unfolded with moderate weather conditions, consistent rainfall, and a steady maturation pace, leading to wines expected to show minerality, and the signature freshness of Cortese.
Technical analyses from the Consorzio confirm that 2025 marked a return to equilibrium after several variable vintages. Spring brought uniform budbreak and flowering, while summer alternated warmth with beneficial rainfall, ensuring healthy canopies and even ripening. Early tastings suggest a vintage of refined structure and tension, promising both early appeal and long-term potential.
An International White Rooted in Place
The Gavi DOCG remains one of Italy’s most globally recognized white wines — exporting around 90% of its total production of 13 million bottles, led by the United Kingdom and United States. The Consorzio continues to invest in these key markets through educational programs, trade masterclasses, and storytelling centered on the region’s diverse soils — the terre rosse, terre bianche and terre miste that define the Cortese grape’s depth and nuance.
«This focus on terroir also highlights another defining trait of Gavi: its remarkable aging potential. While renowned for its brightness and immediacy, Gavi’s best expressions reveal, over time, layers of texture, savory complexity, and mineral length that position it among Europe’s most sophisticated and versatile white wines» says Maurizio Montobbio, President of the Consorzio.
Together, soil diversity and longevity form the backbone of the Consorzio’s international communication strategy, reshaping perceptions abroad: Gavi is no longer seen merely as a crisp, easy-drinking white, but as a layered, terroir-driven, and age-worthy expression of Piedmontese craftsmanship and precision.
Mapping Microclimates: Gavi’s Data-Driven Approach
To sustain this quality in a changing climate, the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi has implemented a pioneering Agronomic and Meteorological Monitoring Project, designed to collect real-time data across the denomination.
With a network of five weather stations, the system tracks temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind, and leaf wetness, providing producers with valuable insights into vineyard dynamics and phenological stages.
«With ongoing climate change, microclimatic variations have become even more evident — something that is increasingly clear from the data we are collecting through the monitoring stations. The data give us the ability to anticipate challenges and adapt vineyard practices intelligently – says Davide Ferrarese, agronomist and Consorzio’s technical consultant – From canopy management to harvest timing, every decision benefits from a technical understanding of Gavi’s microclimates. It’s about protecting the identity of Cortese through knowledge and precision»
These findings, combined with local observation, are helping producers fine-tune their responses to increasing weather variability — confirming that viticulture in Gavi is as much about resilience as it is about heritage.
A Future Built on Knowledge and Character
As winemakers begin to taste the first expressions of the 2025 vintage, Consorzio’s vision is clear: continue merging tradition with technology, terroir with sustainability.
Through scientific initiatives at home and educational outreach abroad, Gavi DOCG reaffirms its place among Europe’s great white wines — a 100% Cortese that speaks of elegance, freshness, and a forward-looking spirit deeply rooted in its soils.
Since 1993, the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi has united 190 winemaking companies to protect and enhance the Gavi Docg appellation. Passion, commitment and quality are enclosed in the 13 million bottles exported to over 100 countries around the world.
Gavi vineyards stretch for 1,600 hectares in south-east Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria: from the foot of the Po Valley, towards the Piedmontese Apennines, 30 km from the sea.
Red clays, white soils and a central strip featuring alternating layers of marl and sandstone are the three different types of soil present in the 11 municipalities of the appellation.
100% produced from Cortese, a native Piedmontese white grape, Gavi DOCG is a fresh and elegant and. Thanks to its versatile and sophisticated nature, Gavi DOCG is known worldwide as the great white wine from Piedmont.
